    by Mike Taylor
    Monday August 25, 2008, 9:50 AM

The Lovely Mrs. Taylor and I just got back from vacation. We were gone only a week or so, but it was wonderful. Nice hotels, great meals, nothing but sunny skies the whole time. Sounds perfect, doesn't it?

Walkout basements and nasty side hills pose big problems due to washouts and mini-mudslides? A decorative wall can be just the ticket in correcting this dilemma and there are many different types and kinds of materials to accomplish this.

MOTHER LODE: Count the cost before disturbing the dust of the ages

    by Cathy Runyon
    Monday August 25, 2008, 9:39 AM

I got out of bed one Saturday and found I had the whole day to myself. The weather was perfect and I knew that this was the day I could finally attack the storage room in earnest.

I could get dirty and not worry about having to clean up for an appointment. I could get exhausted, knowing I could take a nap if necessary. Most of all, there was time. If I got sidetracked while sorting, it was all right.

HIGHER GROUND: Finding life's silver lining

    by Roger Campbell
    Monday August 25, 2008, 9:23 AM

"Look for the silver lining," advises an old song, adding, "There's a silver lining behind every cloud you see."

One struggling sufferer said if all clouds are supposed to have silver linings some of his clouds must be defective.

OUTDOORS: Thrilling Olympic finish shows country's true colors

    by Denny Geurink
    Monday August 25, 2008, 9:22 AM

It was enough to give a tree goose bumps. The raucous jumble of music and loud voices suddenly fell silent. All eyes turned to the big screen TVs that wallpapered the sports bar restaurant. The loud music had been switched off and every TV set in the place was now tuned to the 2008 Summer Olympics. The volume was cranked up as the announcer set the stage for the final of the men's relay race.

REALITY CHECK: Lonely? Try looking for love in robotic places

    by Mike Taylor
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 1:33 PM

I've been lucky in love. Since turning 16, I've usually had a girlfriend, significant other, wife or lover. I'm not especially irresistible; but in my younger days, I was one of those guys willing to settle for whatever happened along. That, I've found, increases dramatically one's chances for finding companionship, though not always suitable companionship.

LAWN & GARDEN: A hot, dry summer could leave your lawn in distress

    by Doug Niemeyer
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 1:30 PM

It seems the lawn takes its biggest beating in the summer; hot sun, not enough water, weeds, fungus--you name it, it will happen. How do you keep a lawn happy when every thing out there is bent on turning it into a wasteland?

A few fun spreads can make a sandwich special

    by Paul Matthews
    Monday August 11, 2008, 10:05 AM

Tomato Basil Butter, Gorgonzola-Scallion Butter, and whipped butter shown with a loaf of Challah bread.
One thing that I like more than anything else is sandwiches. Now, what would a sandwich be without a good spread? Just some meat, cheese, and a couple of pieces of bread. Well, there's no fun in that, so, here are a few ideas to help enhance your sandwich. Continue reading "A few fun spreads can make a sandwich special" »

REALITY CHECK: Life insurance policy may not be healthy for teenagers

    by Michael Taylor
    Monday August 11, 2008, 10:04 AM

Let me preface this column by stating clearly and for the record: I love my teenage stepson.
We've been sharing space beneath the same roof since shortly after his first birthday and I feel the same way about him that I did about my two older, biological children--I can't wait for him to grow up and move away to college, trade school or prison.

Follow the rules and your grass will grow greener

    by Doug Niemeyer
    Monday August 11, 2008, 10:02 AM

Grass can be one of the easiest things to grow if you follow some of the basics.

We are coming into one of the best times for planting grass, although if you have underground sprinkling or enough garden hose you can plant grass anytime. This is important because you must maintain a damp situation in the early stages of planting.

MOTHER LODE: In election years, friends and neighbors may suddenly become enemies

    by Cathy Runyon

By now, a week after the election, the sting of defeat has subsided for the losing candidates and the weight of responsibility is just beginning to settle in for the winners. Those elected to govern may be wondering, "What was I thinking?"

REALITY CHECK: In a perfect world, our pets would outlive us

    by Mike Taylor
    Monday August 04, 2008, 11:25 AM

We just added another one to the Pet Cemetery. Our faithful pooch, Kipper, went this past weekend to the Big Fire Hydrant in the Sky. We held services out at the farm and laid Kipper to rest alongside his old pals Egypt, Speck, Vincent and the numerous bunnies, guinea pigs, parakeets and goldfish that have shared our home over the years.

MOTHER LODE: 100 things you don't need to know or do to live happily

    by Cathy Runyon
    Monday August 04, 2008, 11:18 AM

I'm getting sick and tired of people telling me what to do.

Some time ago I stumbled across a list of 100 books everyone should read. I didn't want to have people at my funeral visitation shaking their heads and talking about how I hadn't read something I was supposed to, so I downloaded the list. I came across it the other day and was struck by the same old guilt. I really have to get cracking on this list, I thought. Time is running out.

HIGHER GROUND: Today's trials build great tomorrows

    by Roger Campbell
    Monday August 04, 2008, 11:15 AM

When the motor on our pump gave out, the repairman advised that we replace both the pump and motor. The cost was nearly six hundred dollars and we had about half of that amount.

"How are we going to pay for this?" my worried wife asked.

"I don't know, I replied." But that day a check came in the mail to cover the total cost of the repair.

RECIPE: Wasabi adds a distinctive 'wow' taste to dishes

    by Kim Racette
    Tuesday July 29, 2008, 3:06 PM

Noodle salad with soy-wasabi vinaigrette uses wasabi paste along with baby corn, carrots, and water chestnuts.
There are few things in life that illicit an involuntary "wow." A spectacular sunset, a blue whale breaching from a calm sea, a gilded palace built for a king. To that list, let's add wasabi, otherwise known as Japanese horseradish. Continue reading "RECIPE: Wasabi adds a distinctive 'wow' taste to dishes" »

REALITY CHECK: Far as I know, the county fair is the only place for corndogs

Water is critical for maturing crops. If the month is dry, apply about 1 to 1½ inches of water a week. Remove and compost spent plants to reduce insect populations, control disease and make way for fall crops.

OUTDOORS: More antlerless permits available in Lower Peninsula this year

    by Denny Geurink
    Tuesday July 29, 2008, 2:51 PM

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to take more antlerless deer from the herd again this year in an effort to put a bigger dent in the overall statewide population. Despite a heavy toll on antlerless deer the past few years the herd still grew by about 20,000 animals this year. A small increase to be sure, but still an increase when the state wants to see the herd decrease.

TIME MACHINE: Paws for reflection: The evolution of Ears for the Deaf

    by Charlotte Weick
    Monday July 21, 2008, 11:23 AM

One of history's great mysteries is how humans first discovered that canines could team up with humans and become protectors and companions. Did some cave dweller find a lone wolf pup, whose mother had been killed by a hunter? Did that cave man or woman sense intelligence and kinship in the animal's eyes?
