Cascade waiving fee for water, sewer connections

Cascade residents thinking of connecting to water and sewer service can get a break if they sign up before Dec 31, 2009. For the next 16 months, the township is waiving its $1,100 connection fee for owners of single-family homes.

Cascade residents thinking of connecting to water and sewer service can get a break if they sign up before Dec 31, 2009. For the next 16 months, the township is waiving its $1,100 connection fee for owners of single-family homes.
Township Supervisor Michael Julien said he hoped the price break would serve as an incentive to people who have water and sewer lines in front of their homes but are not currently hooked up to the system.
Open space named Carl Creek Wetland Preserve

The Ada Township Board formally adopted the name of Carl Creek Wetland Preserve for 34 acres of undeveloped land at 5686 Forest Bend Drive. The move came last week at the recommendation of the Open Space Preservation Board.
The land was acquired last fall from donations from adjacent landowners and a township purchase of $300,400.
Plans are also in the works to install a sign identifying the property. The board voted to enlist local merchant Carlson Design to begin work on a potential design.
No location is set for the Carl Creek sign, but is expected on the Alta Dale Avenue frontage of the property.
Volunteers sought for EGR triahlon

The largest triathlon in the state of Michigan is set to take off for the 25th time. The Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon, with a half-mile swim, 17.2-mile bike and 4.9-mile run around Reeds Lake, is set for 7:30 a.m., Sept. 6, at John Collins Park in East Grand Rapids.
Awards are given to first through fifth place in each age division and there are still openings.
Four from one troop reach Boy Scout Eagle rank

Boy Scout Troop 334 of Cascade has four Scouts who have successfully completed the rank of Eagle - Boy Scouts of America's highest honor. Pictured in back from left are Collin O'Connell and Taylor Wolf and front, from left, are Curtis Durham and Jerrod Harrison.
Curtis Durham, Jerrod Harrison, Collin O'Connell, and Taylor Wolf are all in line for the highest honor bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America - the rank of Eagle. They will receive their ranks together in early October.
Cascade board OKs contract for 28th Street landscaping

The Cascade Township Board has approved a $30,440 bid from Twin Lakes Nursery to install trees and landscaping along 28th Street between Kraft and Thornhills avenues. The landscaping is part of a $1.16 million streetscape project being undertaken by the Cascade Downtown Development Authority.

One of the oldest business associations in Kent County has recently had a makeover.
Established in 1956, The Cascade Business Association has grown "from a networking group to a working group, dedicated to improving the Cascade business experience by meeting needs of the community," said Laura McDowell, association president.

Centennial Park, a 360-acre office and residential park in Cascade Township, has a new set of plans designed to revitalize the area and govern future development and renovations. The Cascade Township Board approved the document last week.

The East Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education is accepting applications to fill a vacancy created by the Sept. 1 resignation of Diane V. Bok.
Under state law, the vacancy must be filled by Sept. 30 and the school board intends to complete its search prior to Sept. 26. The appointee's term will run through June 30, 2009.

The beginning of a new school year is an exciting, busy time for our district. We are excited to be welcoming approximately 3,000 new and returning students into our schools this fall. National premiere of Hospice documentary set for Thursday

A statewide awareness campaign will showcase its efforts in a national premiere documentary of "Except for Six" this week.
Hospice of Michigan put the "Have You Had the Talk?" campaign in place to address the need for a change in collective thinking and public acceptance of end-of-life care. The goals of the campaign are to raise $1 million for patient care and spark discussion about end-of-life care in families and communities.

Maggie Roubal, 10, and Olivia Barbour, 8, learn how math helps them win the game.With a camp literally for most everything today, why not math. That is exactly what East Grand Rapids Lakeside Elementary instructors Kristen Rabideau and Mark Pullen thought, and so last week 59 students from third to fifth grade not only attended, they paid for, and enjoyed math camp.
A week of measurements, diagrams, games, and puzzles, many of which were taken home for further advancement of math concepts in students' lives, was deemed a success.
Ada planners move a bit closer to private landing facility ordinance

An ordinance governing construction of landing facilities for helicopters in Ada Township is again on hold, but getting closer to the next step in the process.
Planning Commissioners agreed last week that they would finish the draft ordinance at a special meeting called for Sept. 9, moving it on to the Township Board for final consideration.

Not only did the Ada Township Planning Commission make no decision on the ATT proposal for a 180-foot cell tower near Pettis and Knapp avenues, it decided to hold an open public hearing until the next meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Sept. 18.
