Actress Suzanne Cheney will be back as Queen Victoria at this year's Dickens Festival, which takes place in downtown Holly weekends beginning Dec. 6. HOLLY, Michigan -- Having received an additional $11,000 through grants and new fundraisers this year, Suzanne Perreault, director of Holly's Downtown Development Authority, says she's looking forward to this year's revamped Dickens Festival.
The festival will be from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 7, Dec. 13 and 14, and Dec. 20 and 21 in downtown Holly's historic Battle Alley.
On Saturday, things get started with the theme of "It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas."
"We've got all kinds of new things planned," Perreault said. "On Saturday, we'll have ice sculpturing going on every hour on the hour. We've also got a new group of featured singers on Saturday -- the Grunyons."

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- If Genesee County roadways require as much as they did last winter, it will mean $726,000 less in funding for summer road projects.
Salting Genesee County highways will cost $41.43 a ton this season, up $8.55 per ton from last year.
The hike comes from the Detroit Salt Co., the county's lowest bidder and the only working salt mine in Michigan, said John Daly, manager-director of the Genesee County Road Commission. There also is the potential for a salt shortage like last year's if there is a heavier-than-normal snowfall.
"Countywide, we used about 85,000 tons (of salt) last year," said Daly.
If the county uses that amount this year, it'll pay $726,000 more for its salt.
"It'll be $726,000 in work we won't do in the summertime," he said.

Lynn and Mark Hay, new owners of Holly's Main Street Antiques, display a turn-of-the-century cherry bookcase with leaded glass doors that once graced the home of composer and lyricist Cole Porter.HOLLY, Michigan -- Collecting things has been a way of life for Mark Hay since he was 5 years old. Now, he and his wife, Lynn, are the new owners of Holly's Main Street Antiques (formerly Antiques On Main) at 118 S. Saginaw St. A grand opening was Friday and Saturday.
"I spent 20 years collecting antiques," said Hay. "My plan was to sell it all when I retired. But then I accumulated so much stuff that I decided to become a dealer."
While dealing in antiques, Hay continued working jobs from 9 to 5 -- first with his own carpet cleaning company and later for a plastics manufacturer. Finally, he cashed out his 401(k) and opened his own antiques business -- the Hayloft, in downtown Holly.

Sharp Funeral Homes President and Chief Executive Officer Roger L. Sharp stands in the new community room, which can be used as an eating space and for post-funeral luncheons, at the Fenton Chapel. The Fenton and Miller Road chapels currently have the community room feature, with Sharp's other two Genesee County locations in Linden and Flint Township soon to follow.FENTON, Michigan -- In the funeral home business, directors aim to help families through the difficult time of losing a loved one.
