Robert Hewitt's love of electronics sparked long career

HewittLENNON, Michigan -- When Robert Hewitt came home one day in the late 1940s, he told his wife, Cecelia, he wanted to take a class to learn about a new technology: television.
"My mother said, 'What the heck is that?'" her son, Thomas Lawrence of Lennon, recalled with a chuckle.
Robert Hewitt, 93, of Lennon died Sunday.

Davison man, John Rawls, loved to laugh, joke with family and friends

DAVISON, Michigan -- People probably knew John Rawls was around the corner before they even saw him.
That's because Rawls of Davison was probably laughing. Rawls, who family said had a distinctive laugh, died Tuesday of a brain aneurysm. He was 57.

FLINT, Michigan -- The city's Riverbank Park might never have flourished if it weren't for the musings of Hilario "Lalo" Perez.
In the 1970s, the Flint resident took his friend and then-Mayor James Rutherford to his native Texas to visit San Antonio's famed Riverwalk -- and a light bulb went off.

FLINT, Michigan -- The Rev. Roy Greer was a mentor to the young people at his church.
Under his 36 years of mentorship at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, he saw some go on to be doctors, lawyers and teachers. He was most proud though to see 26 young men go on to become ministers -- a sign he was doing God's work, said his wife Brenda Greer.
Roy Greer, 73, died Nov. 17. He was the longest serving pastor at Mt. Olive, a Flint mainstay for more than 100 years and one of Flint's oldest black churches.

GRAND BLANC, Michigan -- Jack "Monk" Richardson was all about Grand Blanc.
Richardson met his wife there in the seventh grade, made all-state in 1956 as a football player at Grand Blanc High School and helped with the Grand Blanc football team well after graduation.
Richardson, 70, of Grand Blanc died Monday of kidney failure after surviving three strokes, a heart attack, diabetes and a leg amputation.
"He had an iron will to live," said daughter Holly Thomason. "It was like he had 90 lives.."

MONTROSE, Michigan — People in Montrose knew the Rev. Richard Phillips as the "community pastor."
Phillips, 74, who served the community for about 40 years as pastor at Montrose Baptist Church, died Saturday of multiple myeloma cancer.
"No last name was needed because he had become the 'community pastor' by serving all people, not just his congregation, for over 40 years," Don O'Guinn, president of O'Guinn Family Funeral Homes and a Montrose resident, said in an e-mail. "He had a pastor's heart that was full of love for people."

FLINT, Michigan -- Ernest William Moore touched many lives during his 30 years as an educator and coach in the Flint School District.
Moore, 62, a Flint native known to his friends as Billy, died Tuesday from complications from triple-bypass surgery.
Moore was a longtime coach and teacher at Flint Southwestern Academy until his retirement in 2007.
