DAVISON, Michigan -- People probably knew John Rawls was around the corner before they even saw him.

    Roy Greer

FLINT, Michigan -- The Rev. Roy Greer was a mentor to the young people at his church.

Under his 36 years of mentorship at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, he saw some go on to be doctors, lawyers and teachers. He was most proud though to see 26 young men go on to become ministers -- a sign he was doing God's work, said his wife Brenda Greer.

Roy Greer, 73, died Nov. 17. He was the longest serving pastor at Mt. Olive, a Flint mainstay for more than 100 years and one of Flint's oldest black churches.

    Richard Phillips

MONTROSE, Michigan — People in Montrose knew the Rev. Richard Phillips as the "community pastor."

Phillips, 74, who served the community for about 40 years as pastor at Montrose Baptist Church, died Saturday of multiple myeloma cancer.

"No last name was needed because he had become the 'community pastor' by serving all people, not just his congregation, for over 40 years," Don O'Guinn, president of O'Guinn Family Funeral Homes and a Montrose resident, said in an e-mail. "He had a pastor's heart that was full of love for people."
