Next month she will receive the very first Making Democracy Work Award from Flint's League of Women Voters.

FLINT, Michigan -- Flint's League of Women Voters chose to give their first Making Democracy Work Award to one of the longest working advocates of civil rights in the county.

Charlotte Williams, 80, was chosen to receive the league's first award on Tuesday -- the 88th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote.

"It's a special honor that it would happen on that day," said Williams of Flint, the county's first elected black female county commissioner. "It seems like I've been the first in a lot of things and I'm deeply humbled by that."

• Jessica Hibbs was named to the dean's list. She is a 2006 Flushing High School graduate and daughter of Gary and Denise Hibbs of Flushing.

• David Capuchina was named to the dean's list. He is a 2006 Powers Catholic High School graduate and son of Jose and Caroline Capuchina of Flint.

Alma College

• Amy Wiles was named to the dean's list. She is a 2005 Genesee Christian High School graduate and daughter of Phillip and Janet Wiles of Davison.

• Quanisha Burnett, a freshman at Bowling Green State University in Ohio majoring in physical therapy, has maintained high academic achievements throughout her freshman year of college and as a result has qualified for membership in Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society.

She has also been awarded the following scholarships for the 2008-2009: Bowling Green State University Alumni Association Scholarship, Bowling Green State University Success Scholarship, Orange and Brown High Academic Scholarship, AFSCME Family Scholarship and the Faculty Achievement Award. Burnett is a 2007 Powers High School graduate and daughter of Jamilah Jackson of Flint Township and Sheritha Burnett of Flint.

The following students were named to the dean's list at Mott Community College.

Jim Cheek | The Flint Journal and Swartz Creek NewsBeverly Crampton of Swartz Creek looks over the just installed Army Bronze statue in the Veterans Memorial in Swartz Creek. "I've been so anxious to see this," Crampton's husband is a Veteran and many family members alike.

The statue was the first of five the Swartz Creek Area Veterans Memorial Committee plans to showcase at the site.
