Jessica Gibbs, 17, of Burton takes aim with her bow.BURTON, Michigan -- The main turkey on the Gibbs' family plate this fall won't be the one that comes with Thanksgiving dressing.
It'll be the nation hosting the 2008 Youth World Archery Championship, where sisters Danielle and Jessica Gibbs hope to compete in October.
Jessica, 17, earned one of the 24 spots on the USAA Youth World Archery Championship Team at the national trials held in Colorado earlier this month.
Danielle, 16, is an alternate. Both are students at Carman-Ainsworth High School.
"They've got a lot of grit and really buckle down when the time for competition comes. But their real secret is they basically don't like to lose," joked their coach, Rich Andrews.
Weekly Jog: Reflecting on the Crim; Labor Day 30K on Saturday can help prepare for a fall marathon; and more ...

HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Ever have trouble following your own advice?
That was me Saturday morning at the Crim. On a day area running store owner Mark Bauman ranked in the top 5 hottest Crim days with temperatures in the mid-70s and high humidity at the start, I should have started at a slower and more conservative pace, but I shot out too fast, forcing an inevitable slow down over the second half of the race ( I was about 2-3 minutes slower than I thought I would run).
In retrospect, my goals were a little lofty considering I didn't put in the necessary miles or long runs to run in the low 60s. Still, I ran well and the performance puts me on a solid path to prepare for a fall marathon. How did you feel about your Crim performance? Feel free to comment below.

Read below for how Bill Khan, Dan Nilsen and the other sports writers explain their picks below.
While digesting The Flint Journal's high school football picks for opening week, please cut us some slack.
Week 1 is the toughest week of all to select games. You think you know how good a team might be, but you never really know until it takes the field.
Bill Khan is the defending champion of The Journal's prep prognosticators, going 75-30 last year on the strength of an 11-4 playoff record.
Season-long leader Mark Spezia tanked in the playoffs, going 8-7 to finish 73-32. Greg Tunnicliff was 72-33 and Dan Nilsen never overcame a brutal Week 1, finishing dead last at 70-35.
Here we go ...

CORUNNA, Michigan — The chance to beat Linden's boys cross country team may have come and gone.
The Eagles kept their first five runners out of their season-opening meet Aug. 19 in the Durand Invitational, finishing a distant second to Powers Catholic.
The big boys took the course for Linden Wednesday in the Corunna Early Bird Invitational, a meet that featured three of the top nine teams in Division 2 from last year's state meet.
