    Teens have chance to earn scholarship through Flushing Moose Lodge program

    MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP, Michigan — The Flushing Moose Lodge 1437 is hosting a Youth Awareness program on Oct.18 to offer children in grades 10 through 12 a chance to earn a college scholarship.

    For more than two decades, Moose International has organized high school students into a "speakers' bureau" with the goal of educating preschool and elementary school children on a variety of topics, such as drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, "stranger danger," bullying and peer pressure, and healthy habits and nutrition.

    A local program starts at 9 a.m. at the Flushing Moose Lodge, 7044 N. Elms Road, Flushing.

    Sen. John Gleason honored by Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan

    State Sen. John Gleason, D-Flushing, received the Community Leadership Award from Arlene Gorelick, president of the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan, for his efforts to help people with epilepsy live productive lives.
    TROY, Michigan &mdash On Oct. 2, its 60th anniversary, the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan honored state Sen. John Gleason, D-Flushing, with the Community Leadership Award for his efforts to help people with epilepsy.

    "Thousands of people with epilepsy across Michigan are in a daily battle to keep their seizures under control through medications and diet," said Arlene Gorelick, president of the foundation. "Our Flame of Hope honorees for 2008 have improved the lives of people with epilepsy through their efforts to increase awareness, fundraising and patient care, as well as supporting our proposed patient safety legislation to eliminate unauthorized switching of anti-epileptic drugs."

    Both children and pets can don costumes and have fun at the Pumpkin Path Oct. 18

    FLUSHING, Michigan — The Riverfront Trail is about to take an orange twist when it turns into the Pumpkin Path on Saturday.

    Pumpkins and six to eight vendors will line the trail, which starts behind Bueche's Food World, from 3-6 p.m.

    Volunteers will hand out information about their organizations and offer children's trinkets or other goodies.

    "It's a great family event," said Cheryl Borkowski, a member of the Flushing Parks & Recreation Committee.

    Flushing children learn fire prevention and safety tips from cowboy during National Fire Prevention Week

    Bob Gora does his "Cowboy Bob" routine about fire safety Tuesday for students at St. Robert School part of National Fire Prevention week. Gora said he writes his own songs to sing while teaching children fire prevention tips.
    FLUSHING Michigan — "Cowboy Bob" made his rounds last week, teaching children fire safety with song and dance — and even a lasso.

    Bob Gora, who does presentations for the National Fire Safety Council, spoke to students at St. Robert School, the Early Childhood Center, and Springview, Central, Elms and Seymour elementary schools during National Fire Prevention Week.

    Dressed in red cowboy boots and wearing a belt buckle that lit up with the numbers "911," Gora quizzed students on how to prevent and respond to fires during his interactive routine.

    Flushing Township home invader takes jewelry, laptop computer

    At 1:20 p.m. Oct. 5, a 72-year-old man living in the area of Seymour and Carpenter roads reported a home invasion.

    He said that while he was not home, someone broke into his home and stole jewelry, a TV and a laptop computer.

    Flushing Township juvenile charged with arson of camper

    FLUSHING TOWNSHIP, Michigan — An 11-year-old Flushing Township boy was charged with arson of personal property worth $20,000 or more on Oct. 7.

    Flushing Township Police Sgt. Don Gansen said at about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, a 64-year-old man living on Morrish Road near Frances Road reported his neighbor's fifth-wheel trailer was on fire. The witness said he saw a boy running from the scene westbound on Frances Road.

    Gansen said a Flushing Township officer found the boy matching the description and smelling of gasoline. He had thrown the gas can in a nearby creek.

    Security features added to Flushing schools

    FLUSHING, Michigan — No incidents led to a change in pickup procedures at the Early Childhood Center, but security has increased throughout the district to err on the side of caution, officials say.

    "We were always careful, but in this day and age, you can't be too careful," said Kaye Brisson, principal of Flushing's Early Childhood Center, while explaining new check-in procedures at the school.

    The week of Sept. 29, a new pickup procedure was instituted for guardians of junior kindergarten and kindergarten students at the center.
