Georgetown Township Trustee Stan Sterk said last week it's time the Georgetown Township board "quit sticking our heads in the sand" and open the door to serving liquor by the glass.

I DID vote on Tuesday, Aug. 5.
I was amused by Catherine Barry's Letter to the Editor (Aug. 19 Grand Valley Advance), namely: "Where were the people who have enjoyed the 11-percent tax DECREASE in the past FOUR years that Supervisor (Bill) Holland has been in office?"

I am one of the 6,000-plus voters who voted in Georgetown Township's recent election. I do not agree with Mr. Holland's assessment of the reason so few voted. The idea of a possible change to a manager form of government was made very clear to voters, which suggests that those who stayed home simply didn't care one way or the other. It is obvious that most who did vote were not satisfied with the status quo. I disagree with Bill Holland, who thinks we don't have issues at the local level.

Why are our federal tax dollars being spent on new traffic lights in Georgetown Township? The Ottawa County Road Commission received a federal grant from our Congress to put up new walk lights! This is certainly outside of the U.S. Constitution's definition of our federal government's responsibility.

City of Zeeland officials are planning $3.6 million in improvements to the Clean Water Plant.
The renovations include replacing grinders for grinding sticks, stones, plastic, and other material that would ruin pipes at the facility along with new sludge storage tanks, a new forcemain line for transporting treated water, a new nonportable water system, building repairs, security improvements, and paving. The plant is located at 144 E. Lincoln Ave.

The previous co-owner of the E-3 restaurant on 28th Street in Grandville has asked for a liquor license for his new business, Tailgater's Sports Bar.
Kentwood resident Frank Russo said he and his business partner, Michael Vodry, are asking Grandville to approve the transfer of a Class C liquor license to the sports bar.

Zeeland Township will stay dry.
The deadline for a petition requesting the township lift its alcohol ban has passed and no documents were turned in, Supervisor Glenn Nykamp said recently. The petition, which required 1,200 signatures, would have put the issue before township voters in November.
