Tom Kowalski's 'The Point After': Martz bigger fan of Kitna than O'Sullivan

    by James Schmehl | MLive.com
    Thursday September 18, 2008, 9:07 PM

    The Point After 9-18-08

Lions insider Tom Kowalski has a few choice words for critics that think Detroit's front office made a mistake by not retaining former quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan.

J.T. O'Sullivan, right, was the backup behind Jon Kitna last year. On Sunday, the two quarterbacks will face each other with O'Sullivan being slightly favored.

"This whole thing about how the Lions missed out and they did the wrong thing by not getting O'Sullivan because it looks like he might be an up-and-comer - that's a crock," Kowalski said on his hour-long weekly radio show on WDFN-Detroit. "That really isn't true because Jon Kitna, at this stage, is a lot better quarterback - at least he was in Mike Martz' offense."

O'Sullivan understudied behind Kitna last year with Detroit, before following Martz, the former Lions offensive coordinator, to San Francisco. O'Sullivan, who is 12th in the NFL in passer rating at 96.3, has found instant success under Martz - leading the 49ers to a 1-1.

"That makes no sense to me, whatsoever," Kowalski said. "If J.T. O'Sullivan and Mike Martz were still in Detroit, Jon Kitna would be the quarterback. Mike Martz thinks Jon Kitna is a lot better quarterback than J.T. O'Sullivan. If both of those guys were in San Francisco right now, Jon Kitna would be the quarterback and not J.T. O'Sullivan."

Listen to Killer's entire one-hour show as he dissects the reason behind Martz's departure and key concerns Detroit should to focus on for its Sunday matchup at San Francisco.

lets have a reunion and see, send Kitna to SanFran for a future 5th round pic.

    Posted by vsledge2 on 09/18/08 at 9:27PM

I am pulling for an 0-3! So then maybe the franchise will wake up and ditch management.

and please for the love of God get rid of this ridiculous outdated Tampa 2 Defense which yields the most points of any defense in the league!!!

Posted by TheCadKid on 09/18/08 at 9:46PM

vsledge: It isn't the T-2, it's the players executing it. Just look at the Bears' defense, they execute it very well.

Their d-line doesn't get a consistent pass rush, the linebackers can't tackle and Bodden & Bullocks alone don't constitute a full secondary.

    Posted by redwing111 on 09/18/08 at 9:50PM

Maybe we should just give Kitna to San Francisco before Sunday's game. It can only work to our advantage.

Posted by popeww on 09/18/08 at 10:02PM

    cadkid:

let me begin by saying that i believe that the packers actually suck. but didn't our defense look like they were getting it figured out in the 2nd half? the only bad play was that long bomb, and kelly's toe just caught in the turf, it's a freak play. even for the lions, D-backs falling down is a freak play. even after that huge play, they kept their composure and held GB to a field goal. of course, if they hadn't sucked so much in the 1st half we would have won, but whatever... i just wonder if they were just playing well for that moment, or if they began to understand better how to play that D as a unit, getting on the same page. i just can't believe that the unit from the preseason games, against other teams' #1 units was a mirage. they were playing the system, getting picks and sacks. i think we'll see that D again soon, and i hope it's this week.

Posted by BassetHounds on 09/18/08 at 10:07PM

Forget talking about Martz, talk about the players.Martz is in S.F the same reason he was here. Trying to get the Head Coach fired so he could get the job. When he saw it could't do it here he created a situation were he had to get fired.

Posted by thehylandr on 09/18/08 at 10:14PM

I'd trade Kitna to SF for an 8th round pick!!!

With Kitna at SFs helm, it's guaranteed our D will have a couple picks and at least 12 of our points!!! Too bad Drew is broke for a couple more weeks.

    Posted by vsledge2 on 09/18/08 at 10:32PM

CadKid, I accept your comment that the players (not just the scheme) are responsible for the failure of the Tampa2. But this is the third year and we (presumably) drafted all these guys just for this system.

What do we do now? keep the scheme and get new players?

I would rather go with big (not undersized) defensive guys who can run, fight shed blocks instead of bouncing off O-linemen, and simply draft the best D-guys available. If DIzon cant bench press 225 12 times, well that is pathetic, not just in the NFL, but for college and many high schools. I recall our local gym rats could bench 225 a dozen times and they werent athletes.

I like dizon and would put him in the safety slot if he could run better than his 4.69.

Posted by showmee on 09/18/08 at 10:51PM

I'm curious how Tom knows exactly what Mike Martz thinks? Tom states: "Mike Martz thinks Jon Kitna is a lot better quarterback than J.T. O'Sullivan."

The only class I flunked in school was that mindreading one. It appears Tom aced it! NOT!!

This is just more drivel to incite we "news" starved Lions fans to read his articles. And hey, it works. :-) We're here.

As for the better QB...I don't know what Martz "thinks" but if it's true, figures never lie...O'Sullivan's 96.3 passer rating after only starting TWO games for Martz MUST BE way less than our Jon-boy's numbers?? What are Kitna's numbers anyway? 110? 120? 140? Surely must be. He's a better QB in Martz's system than Kitna....according to Tom. That's laughable.

Posted by kti on 09/19/08 at 5:51AM

CadKid, you're right, its the players not the system, just as it always is in any scheme. But, who put these players together and why were they so convinced we had this wonderful defense? To me, that is the real question. As has been stated, Chicago is playing the T-2 well and I believe Indy will too when they get completed healthy. Why some people think a system, in and of itself, elevates players is beyond me.

    Posted by CHIEFGER139 on 09/19/08 at 7:03AM

    CAD KID
the problem is rod is a defensive guy in his 3rd year, theres absolutely positively no reason our defense should be dead last with a supposed defense guy running the show!! i dont give a crap if we play the sand lot system or what the hell we play-but what ever it is it must be better (im not sayin scrap the t-2 just make it work better)cause i agree it wouldnt mater if we had brady or peyton we cant score enough if our defense is giving up 21 points by the early 2nd quarter-this is all on rod-he's the defensive guy-fix it-and fix it fast-our gas tank has a huge hole in it and needs either patched or scrapped and get a new tank-period!!

Posted by russthomas on 09/19/08 at 7:23AM

Who is saying that O'Sullivan is a better QB than Stiffna? Perhaps ONE writer brought it up and now the Lions want everyone to know how much Martz loved Stiffna? Who cares! Martz has taken unknows like Green, Warner & Bulger and made them very good QB's. I find it funny WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE saying O'Sullivan is a better QB than Stiffna? The only thing I will say is O'Sullivan has more upside than Stiffna whose 35 yrs old.

Posted by mmmcornbread on 09/19/08 at 7:49AM

Kitna will be throwing to San-fran most of the fourth quarter any how, so whats the difference.....

Posted by RionS on 09/19/08 at 8:33AM

I'm not a big Kitna fan but I remember how much worse JT looked when he played here and if he beat out Alex Smith then that's not saying much about Smith. As for the Tampa 2, even the successful teams are only great safety, middle linebacker or defensive end (or all) away from giving up alot of points. It seems like if everything isn't just right that it's not that effective.See the Bears last year or the Colts the year before their Superbowl win.

    Posted by CHIEFGER139 on 09/19/08 at 8:57AM

    BRING BACK FONTES!!
he ran tampas defense too before he came here and i never remember anywhere near the problems with the lions that rod has. plus fontes (so called less great receivers) didnt drop the ball like ours do now and fontes never had a qb even as good as kitna-go figure!! and our defense never sucked as bad as it does now!! they make me puke-and im a diehard fan!! fix it rod or get out of town!!

    Posted by jarvek7 on 09/19/08 at 9:33AM

Jon Kitna has one game- ONE GAME- to cleran up his pissy attitude and start executing his job as QB. He has one game to show me he is going to make the right decision, the right throw and not fold under pressure. One fricking game. After that we need to give Stanton the keys to the kingdom and anoint him as QB.

Kitna has had two years and two games to get his sheeeee-it together and when the game is in his hands he flushes our chances to win down the toilet.

To quote Gene Hackman in the movie 'The Replacements':

"when the games on the line- winners want the ball."

For Kitna's entire career he has flubbed every chance when the game in on the line.

I doubt Kitna can make it happen against the 49ers... so let's usher in the Stanton era.

Posted by wrfetish on 09/19/08 at 9:33AM

No system works with horseshat players. There is no systems for the jokey harringtons, crogs, and bmw's of the world.Just as no defense will thrive when not given good young talent.9 of the last 10 1st rd picks have been on offense. It's funny because 1 of the decent 1st rd picks they did make is simms..It's no secret that this defense would suck this year.C'mon what did they do to improve the personelle? Sorry kids it was god awefull last year and this year it's even worse....With rod we bust

    Posted by CHIEFGER139 on 09/19/08 at 9:54AM

    JARVEK
how soon you forget the 4th quater comeback last year vs the bears where we broke the league record for 4th quater points scored with kitna at the helm-killer is right somethings up with kitna-hes not playong as well as last year and seems to be losing his cool way too much. i do agrree kitna needs to step it up-but no way do i feel stantons ready-at least not yet!!

    Posted by adguy2 on 09/19/08 at 9:58AM

Cheif, did you finally snap? What gives?

I actually miss Wayne Fontes and even Bobby Ross...I wish we stayed with Moeller. That would've meant no Millen.

I must admit that I thought bringing in Millen was a good thing...but that quickly faded after Mooch.

This is what I said at the beginning of the season...aside from preseason, this team has lost 9 of their last 10 games. They did not make any major upgrades except their secondary. They are the same team. AND they blew out Martz...a head coach and OC that has won a SB and has made an appearance in a SB. Look at St. Louis now...not the powerhouse they once were.

This organization can't spot talent and good football people to run operations (Fontes under Jerry Vanisi, who BTW was also run out of town). Vanisi was responsible for players like Blades, Spielman, Lomas, Barry, Moore, Perriman, Ball...the last lion team that meant something to this town. WHAT A SHAME now.

    4-12

Who cares about O'Sullivan! I want to know what the Lions are going to do to stop the bleeding. How long do they have to keep losing before they get rid of Millen?

Posted by whylionswhy on 09/19/08 at 10:16AM

Who's been making all the noise about how the Lions "missed out and they did the wrong thing by not getting O'Sullivan because it looks like he might be an up-and-comer - that's a crock," Kowalski said

I've read every dumbass (and the few good ones) post on here and haven't heard one peep about this. Is it a slow news day or are you just trying to stir the pot and start some controversy?

Posted by LionsRbad on 09/19/08 at 10:41AM

The only 2 kinds people that could think O'Suckagain is better than the not very good Kitna
#1 People that know nothing about football.
#2 Lions front office.(I know 1 and 2 are the same answer)
I'm not sure how this can be a topic with all the real issues this team has. Lets ask and cover why this team has so much trouble building a championship team or at least a team that can play over .500.

    Posted by CHIEFGER139 on 09/19/08 at 10:46AM

    in killers defense
I was one who asked if we made a mistake by letting o'sullivan go on his live blog chat yesterday-he ignored my question at the time but i guess decided to hammer me on it in his radio program-i dont know if there were others asking the same question but wasnt long after that on the live blog he posted were all asking the same questions-in hind sight with our questionable qb's and with o'sullivan lighting up seatle last week i thought it was a legitimite question.

Posted by dreameagle on 09/19/08 at 10:58AM

    folks, when the T-2 worked in Tampa Bay, it was because they had WARREN SAPP AND BOOGER MCFARLAND up front;

    what've we got?

    a bunch of cruiserweight tackles what get swept aside like so many tampons, that's what;

    why we didn't get that kid Infy cut for weed i do not know, but we better get somebody who can clog up the middle or we will not win a single game this year;

Jordon Dizon (LB) Limited Pract - Neck
Langston Moore (DT) Limited Pract - Groin

C'mon Killer. Normally I defend you but it's about time you step up to the plate and give us some real info. Are you even going to the practices? This is the kind of info these guys want. Not some bogus crap about O'Suckagain (thanks lionsrbad) and how the Lions made a mistake in letting him go.

I don't know if you remember but I predicted fdr would become a cancer by midseason.Perhaps I was off a little like my 5-11 prediction

    Posted by ClickMan77 on 09/19/08 at 12:13PM

Just ignore IT people. Speaking to it will just give it ammunition. It will go away if ignored like a little kid.

About the JT vs Kitna issue I agree with Measly 100%. They both suck! Our 50 year curse is up so isnt it time we bring in our new QB? I'm not superstitious but you never know, Stanton could be the next Elway. Go ahead and fire away people.

Posted by whylionswhy on 09/19/08 at 12:27PM

Click, at least Stanton can move his feet. Also, in stead of sliding a yard short, he'll dive forward and pick up three extra yards. It may not be what NFL coaches want him to do but at least he makes plays. Not sure if we have NFL coaches anyway.

Also click, you gonna be on JustinTV on Sunday?

Posted by wrfetish on 09/19/08 at 12:31PM

It'll be funny to see the scapegoat beat millen over the bead with a qb off the street and a bunch of nobody wrs. It'll be fun to see willis bring down cj a few times[irony].

    Posted by ClickMan77 on 09/19/08 at 12:37PM

    whylionswhy,

I'll be there as long as we don't have a blackout, then I'll be at the bar. You gonna be on there?

I agree with you about the 3 extra yards thing. Stanton showed no fear in the preseason, he may be just what this team needs to give them that spark in their a**. We don't need someone thats always crying and yelling at coach's. I see Staton as a true team leader. If not I'm ok with that, just as long as we get rid of Kitna.

    Posted by CHIEFGER139 on 09/19/08 at 12:40PM

    unfortunately
OUR LIONS HAVE A VERY LONG HISTORY OF FORMER LIONS QB'S and players, coaches that leave later coming back and torching us-remember morningwig with philly last year-joey a few years before that, charlie batch, rodney pete-the list goes on!! thats the only thing that bothers me with this game, oh yeah we usually suck on the road-thought coach rod fixed that problem but atlanta game showed otherwise.
still think we will win 28-25 lions one win down ten more to go!!
lions great in 2008-playoffs and beyond!!

    Posted by adguy2 on 09/19/08 at 12:40PM

Basically the same as Kitna vs O'sullivan, except both are men.

Posted by whylionswhy on 09/19/08 at 12:40PM

Um..excuse me fellow posters but, we've had 47 posts so far and not one direct statement of "FIRE MILLEN". What is wrong with you people? Are you all falling asleep on me?

Posted by whylionswhy on 09/19/08 at 12:43PM

fetish, I think willis will have to catch him first. There isn't a linebacker in the NFL that could stay with him stride for stride. Let's just hope Kitna gets him the ball in stride instead of making him do all kinds of acrobatics to catch the ball.

Actually, Killer is really assuming allot by say this is going in the tank and all the "IFs" he talks about. Now it's true our Lions haven't demonstrated the ability to be good and have only given us reason to doubt but come on....we are only two games into the season, really. Like I said talk to me after 7 games, I refuse to speculate on this Lions team.

    O TALANT
i agree , we had too many new starters starting out this year and too many new rookies to work in. i actually thought it could take a few weeks 2 jell and from the millen interview yesterday it sounded like millen was really impressed with how there were working out and felt they needed no changes whatsoever-unlike the struggling vikes and rams-bet sundays win is the 1st of many as we work our selves back into the expected BY MOST EVERYONE playoff status.

Fetish, I completely understand what you're saying. I don't know who posted it before and I'm too lazy to go look but, maybe the new chant should be something along the lines of "take control Junior". I really don't have any faith in him either but I think he's smart enough to Fire Millen. I'll admit, my dad said before the season even started that they need to fire everyone and start over and I strongly dissagreed with him. I still do but it won't be long before I side with him if this fiasco continues.

    WRFETISH
after this direct quote from millen

On the state of the team:

"I believe in the guy I hired (head coach Rod Marinelli) and I believe in the staff we put together and I believe in the players we have on the field. If you want to point a finger at anybody for that stuff, it's on me. I'm fine with that because I believe in what's out there.''

how could you posibly put out that post addressing whylionswhy-dont you even read these articles?? stay awake-thats not like you.

    Posted by sweeney71 on 09/19/08 at 1:19PM

OK....ive been a loyal lions fan for the better part of my life and I STILL AM. there are alot of haters in here who want to get down on the "same old lions" and kick them to the curb. good! let them! lets hope teams in the NFL do the same. So we are 0-2, big deal!!!

you know who else is 0-2?

San Diego, the Jags, dolphins, the browns, the bangels, KC, Minn, the rams, and the seahawks

its only week 3 and people are throwing the lions...well, to the lions. its almost funny to me. do people doubt if the chargers are going to make the playoffs? the browns? the jags? Minn?

can someone remind me..what team started out 0-2 last season? i believe it was the giants. season seemed to work out well for them i think.

CJ looks amazing, roy needs to get the ball thrown at him more, and in the same breath he needs to consintrate on the ball and not the run after. Furrey and Mcdonald look good and K Smith looks great for a 3rd round pick.

we were down 21-3 at the half and aaron kampman had 2 sacks. we bench foster and put in Goz and kampman didnt even have A TACKLE!!! kitna was kept clean the rest of the game...now kitna...i give him this one last game. if he buckles again, and i mean 2 picks, he should be sat down. give the team to drew, this system is tailor made for him anyway. i love how people in here say drew isnt the answer..THIS OFFENSE IS DREW STANTON!! roll out bootleg and take off or toss it depending on the read. Kitna is afraid to run, thats obvious after the packers game when he could have taken it into the endzone but rifled it over furreys head instead. he is old and just cant take it anymore. we need crazy legs stanton in there plain and simple, and as far as i see it we will get that by the end of the season.

if our defense can hold like it did in the second half of the packers game then we will be in good shape the rest of the season.

IS IT ASKING TO MUCH FOR AVRIL, FLU, AND DIZON?!?!

CHIEFGER139--Chiefy,I'm listening to wxyt while on line. They were reading quoats from people after millen was hired. Here's one of note BILL ford jr 'I know matt millen will do a great job,I stake my reputation on it!!!!
I must admit I wanted a 'football guy' in charge unfortunaly that's all he was. I was as wrong as you could be.

    adguy,

No were not the same, there are still true Lions fans out there brotha. Chief and I play against each other in the mlive fantasy football league, pitt, willy and I are myspace buds and whylionswhy is my justintv bud. So get your facts straight before opening your fly trap.

    Posted by tp28 on 09/19/08 at 1:33PM

Ok, I know the defense can't stop anyone, but that offense is definitely contributing to the losses. The Lions somehow had a chance at that game on sunday, and Kitna throws three picks, and two go to the endzone. I know who Kitna is throwing to before the snap most of the time, and I'm pretty sure the professional football players on the other side have a good idea themselves. The Lions won't win until they address the Lines. The defense was letting Turner go by and trying to jump on his back against Atlanta, and I think I would to....he's a powerful guy, and if he's got a full head of steam because he was untouched coming through the line, I have to believe he's going to punish our small linebackers. I don't care if Dizon knows the full offense yet or not, he can tackle and that's what they need right now....they've been down 21-0 pretty quickly two weeks in a row now with Lennon starting, gotta believe it couldn't be anything but better with Dizon. I could go on forever about just how bad this team is...they have a chance to lose each and every game this year unless something changes drastically.

sweeney71--I recognize your name from the news forum..Only 3 of those teams made the playoffs last year.If our defense was good they wouldn't be where they are. They were dead last in defense and averaged 28 points against a game last season and added virtually nothing. So far they are allowing around 41 per.Pass the kool-aide

lucky for you and everyone in here i make my kool aid in a 55 gallon drum. plenty for anyone who wants to grow a set and root for their team when their down. if not, i think there is still room on the bears wagon.

YOUR RIGHT OUR DEFENSE CANT HOLD
but our offense is very good at it-just ask backus-maybe he can give the defense some pointers.

you know you're in a depression when you refer to wayne fontes as the "golden years" of detroit lions football.

    Posted by sprawl125 on 09/19/08 at 1:58PM

I'm not on the Stanton bandwagon yet but If Kitna costs us a game in SF like he did against GB, Marinelli is going to have some explaining to do.

Posted by wrfetish on 09/19/08 at 1:59PM

sweeney71--What since 1968 isn't enough? There's a difference between dumb and brave, and if it's comming from a 55 gallon drum it's liquid courage which wears off after some sleep and not that impressive. Then all that's left for all your bravery is a headache. You were wrong on the news forum mostly so your talk is right in character with your past postings.Cheers and good luck with such a big set.

Posted by costes on 09/19/08 at 1:59PM

maybe the solution would be for the defense to play offense and vice versa.

    GUYS CHEER UP
the tampa 2 is the defense of champions, and we have the defensive coach of one of those champions-tampa bay running our team, this is there 3rd year at it and everYone says it doesnt jell until the 3rd year. Our guys are very close to mastering it AS THEY SHOWED LAST GAME IN THE 2ND HALF.
and were very close to breaking through as a top 5-10 defense-
theres only a few more things we need to correct-
those being tackling, gettin blown off the line of scrimage and pass coverage-
once we get those minor issues fixed we will be great.

Being the 3rd game of the season, I shall remain optimistic about a turnaround. With the "veterans" playing in the ATL game, the run D was beyond atrocious. Changes showed improvements last week, even if it was hard to believe after getting down 21-0 again. We saw alot of improvements that have already been noted (Cheribust, as doubters call him, being one of them) and if some more changes take place between now and the end of game 3 there is no reason the Lions cannot go into SF and win. Throw out history and road records, it only means something to historians and statisticians. What alot of us have said is Rod is stubborn about playing younger guys and this trend will continue until someone splits his head open (ala Weis last weekend) and he gets a clue regarding his worthless veterans. IMO, he sees the veterans perform well all week and thinks his chances are best with them. Most times, this is true. In our case, lol, it's on the complete opoosite end of the spectrum. Dizon was drafted to make tackles cuz thats all he did in college. Flu has one of the quickest steps (doesn't that translate to being disruptive in the backfield, possibly forcing the play into the arms of someone else). We know Bodden should have started all along. Why can't Rod see it? This is where my doubts about the team come from. I was a "In Rod we trust" believer but after the first two games, the "gotta look at the tape", "pound the rock", and now the "chokin on a turkey" b.s., I'm having a hard time believing he can be the next big coach. I think he is starting to draft some good talent but, please Rod, you don't know unless you play em. I think we may see Stanton after the bears or vikings, even if kINTa (stole that one) doesn't do too bad. And, we may get our wish and see the rest of the rookies playing pretty soon also. Especially if Lenon, Cody and Darby continue down the path they've been on. It's funny how game 3 could be the determining factor as to how the remainder of the season plays out, for the team, gm, coach and all its veterans.

Having a big set just means they get in the way of where the real action is...

Posted by MIfaninMN on 09/19/08 at 2:34PM

Chief, Rod knows the T2 but is too stubborn to play the guys he has actually drafted to play. He brought in the retreads and is holding on to the veterans. Maybe he thinks he can "coach" those ___'s into the next Urlacher or something. I, for one, don't get it. Put "YOUR GUYS" in there Rod. Then you can say he is a good coach or it's not gonna work. It most definitely isn't cutting it with the "veterans".

MArinelli used a lot of sayings when he talks. He's good at that at least. HE could run for president.

I want to hear more about how the guys on the team have great motors.

Dizon will start following the bye week.
Fluellen will start following the MN game.
    Stanton will start against WA.

Now we need to see who's out there to replace Ravioli @ ctr and Backup at LT. Then, maybe you can win a few more.

Thru all this madness nobody has mentioned why the he!! Brian Kelly is starting when he can't tackle or keep up with recievers anymore. We have a talented back-up named Keith Smith that needs to be starting. He runs a 4.3 and has ball skills. His talent is wasting sitting on the bench and only playing a few snaps. They should play him to see what we have and what our needs will be for next season as far as the secondary goes!! It was painfully obvious last week that kelly is all washed-up...any opinions on that???

Has anyone heard if the league is gonna punish Pearson for his earlier offseason antics or is that all fallen by the wayside?

Millenjuice, maybe they will discipline Pearson for his woman choking and Kelly for his whiffs and it'll clear some roster spots for some receivers.

I've just had a revelation. It isn't OL or DL help we need. We need some receivers with football character who look good on tape. Let's not bother putting the rookies on actual game tape and see what they can do. I sure am glad it didn't take me until the season was lost before I figured that out!

    Posted by ClickMan77 on 09/19/08 at 4:13PM

    wrfetish,

Pit would never change his name! He just doesnt want to waste his time on here with all the haters saying I told you this team sucks, Millen sucks, WCF sucks, you know the same old BS you spew out every day. He'll be back Sunday after our win.

Posted by wrfetish on 09/19/08 at 4:27PM

ClickMan77--He's changed his name before. And as far as the stuff I spew? At least I'm in reality and don't fawn over every lion player signed or drafted. You were really excited about this guy then he gets cut your disappointed. Why? This is a team of castoffs and has-beens,coached by a soon to be ex 1 time headcoach..I know I would rather read stuff from someone who knows what's going on,instead of constant cheerleading dreamers. But that's me I deal in reality and have been pretty close so far in my predictions.I have LEARNED after several years not to bet with my heart or to expect big things when only little things are changed......Sundays game could be the coup de gras.

No spin from players and coaches? Because he could never get them on the show. They won't talk to Tom.

Posted by BLACKACCENTS on 09/19/08 at 6:17PM

Please for the love of God stop saying we're "going all the way across the country" It sounds like a built in excuse for the team. "well ,you know what?, we had to go all the way across the country" That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. No one in history has ever complained about a cross country trip like these fools. Win the gosh damn game and quit your fricken crying.

    We will win this game.

Posted by millersco on 09/19/08 at 6:34PM

Tom, enjoyed listening to the show. Couple questions:
    1. I understand that Martz may appear to be the scape goat, but the 3 and out problem, and terrible percentage on third downs didn't change over Matrtz's tenure. Nor did our red zone %. He said after his first year that he was going to solve the red zone problem - but nothing changed. Kitna continued to make bad choices in the end zone, we didn't use our big receivers etc. We moved the ball but didn't score when we needed to. So I don't agree when you say the offense wasn't a problem. When we ran the ball we won or came close, when we didn't run the ball we were out of it. If we hadn't changed our run scheme in the off season I bet our running game would be much better than it is right now - hopefully it will come around - just bad timing.
    2. I agree on playing the rookies . Whats the point in drafting them if they don't play. You already know the performance of your veterans, and it hasn't been good enough to win, so let them grow. Play Stanton, Dizon, Cherilus, 5-0, Avril, Fluellen. Rod talks about manning up, well let them man up. 5-0 played the run pretty well last game when he was in, I don't see why we are waiting. Jared isn't fast enough to contain rolling out QB's and teams know it.
    3. What happened to all the blitzing on defense and roll outs etc on offense that they did in the pre-season. Doesn't seem like its been applied much in our two games so far. We let loose and pressured Carson Palmer and so on. Appears we get too conservative in the real game. Pearson and Bodden both did well intercepting passes last year, yet I don't think we have had one yet. Kelly was playing tight on Chad in the pre-season, yet we look too far off the ball and too tentative, altough it picked up later in the GB game.Again seems like we are too worried about making mistakes instead of just playing hard and taking risks now and then.
    4. Agree that Kitna doesn't appear right. He has bad games where he is innaccurate, seen that the past couple years. But he continues to under throw and can't get on the same page as Roy (who's ever fault that is). On another forum a writer said Jon looks stiff and unable to move well. I would agree with that. Maybe his temperment is something he is "doing" to try and recover faster.
Obviously we can't say, and he's been hit alot, but he doesn't look healthy. Another reason in my opinion to go with Stanton now and let the team develop together. Coaches have to make tough decisions.

Posted by poundtharock on 09/19/08 at 7:20PM

LOL......Killer get some real inside news like when in p1$$ will the lions have a team??

JT will SHOW martz why he's better by destroying the lions secondary and Kitna..don't we mean Quit-na? He'll prove that not only does Martz not think he's better than JT but quitna will prove that he's one of the worst in the league to everybody by getting sacked, picked off, fumbling, you know the same garbage he does game in game out!

On another note, arent these the same defensive players(exception of kelly, bodden, smith and no rogers), 3rd year in T2 for them, WORSE results...yet millen says they'll get it, be patient. When? when they're retired and we play the rooks 5 years from now and have the same results?

Millen should at least be dragged out into greektown and stoned. How does millen have the audasity to tell the fans to be patient? He's gonna get his a$$ kicked. Win or shut the F up fattie.
