Kowalski on WDFN: Lions' changes to offense, defense driven more by desperation

    by Philip Zaroo | MLive.com
    Wednesday October 08, 2008, 1:09 PM

It's true that the shifting the Detroit Lions have done on offense and defense runs against head coach Rod Marinelli's belief in consistency. But he's left with little choice.

The defense was supposed to be much better than it is right now, after two full years, MLive Lions Insider Tom Kowalski tells WDFN's Sean Baligian on It Is What It Is. After four huge losses, the no-huddle offense and addition of blitzes look more like signs of desperation.

"I think that he got to the point where he said, 'Look, I know this (defense) works," he says. "But we don't have the guys to make it work. So we have to do something different.'

"And I think it was an admission by him – that he'll never, ever, ever say publicly – that they just don't have the talent for this thing to work."

Listen to the whole interview to hear Killer's take on wide receiver Roy Williams and how his Lions teammates perceive him:

I live in South Florida. Talk radio down here is buzzing with rumors of a Roy Williams to the Dolphin deal. FYI

    Posted by 50yearsgone on 10/08/08 at 2:02PM

    ftlaudlion;

Give us Chad Henne or Jake Long and it's a done deal.

e.g. it'll never happen. Detroit will just let him go next year into FA or they'll really F it up and make him the franchise player and they'll get more of the same production and cry baby antics with a higher price tag

Note to Marinelli; If your players can't make your schemes work it's easier to change schemes than change players.

Posted by nocallion on 10/08/08 at 2:11PM

The sad thing is that they have tried to change schemes to suit the players and it still doesn't work.

our defense is to small to change schemes, the new GM has to clean house!

    FIRE ROD!

    ftlaudlion,

The "rumor" stems from a column writtn by a guy at the sun sentinel. He was just bringing up a what if scenario.

However, I do like what he had to say. The Dolphins have two second round picks next year. I would take one of those for Roy.

    WELL KILLER
if your the reporter rod hammered over the garbage time comment i can now see why rod and compamy give you no inside info and why we've been fed all the phony articles youve posted that most turn out to be wrong!! rod doesnt respect you at all does he!! for your sake i hope rod is fired soon-hate to have them fire you cause you no longer have any respect as a inside guy.

Why do we keep Merinelli, Barry, and Coletto?

The Athletic trainer, physical therapist, and janitor could coach a 34-7 loss!

At this point the players should have an input on what they think might work. The poiint being the season is lost so it doesnt matter. Start the demolition to make way for the rebuilding.

Posted by ironparson on 10/08/08 at 4:12PM

WCF should bring in someone (until the end of the season) to start evaluating the team. To see what we actually have and dont have. Somebody already retired with a lot of football knowledge would be perfect. Like Ron Wolfe for just one example.
There is no good reason to put off what we could be doing now to prepare for the restructuring.

I think we should bring in all the out of work GMs as consultans, that way we get to pick they brain&interview them at the same time.just a thought.clickdaddy once again good job with the football talk, keep up the good work&be nice.thankyou.

the rats are leaving the ship...

    although i cannot blame a rookie like Kenneth Moore, escaping to a contender;

    wonder who's next?

Posted by osmosejerry on 10/08/08 at 5:54PM

i really dont understand all of the fire rod crap.he is the teacher here, and it looks like his students are letting him down(again).so what do they do now? fire rod? of course, thats the easy part.bring in a new guy for three years and fire him too.i believe that rod is the guy to bring this team up from the ashes, but it might(it will) take longer.he does need a good off cord, for darn sure.but he needs some real players, talented players.i believe it will come together with this team,i really do.the off line needs about 1or2 more games to gel and then the running game should take off.(green bays off line took im pretty sure 6wks to gel last year).he (rod)will fix the defense.but, man, stop whining like a bunch of damn babies because they are losing? youre DETROIT LIONS FANS/ITS NOT LIKE THEY HAVENT DONE THIS CRAP BEFORE!!!so on sunday do some yardwork while the game is on or paint the house, check in on them throughout the day like i do.my heart is feeling much better by not watching the whole game.

    Posted by forreal0820 on 10/08/08 at 6:07PM

I don't think we (Detroit fans) should focus on the players too much, I say "too much" only because I truly believe that some of the players are just not playing in a position that befits them i.e. Bodden, or for that matter Kitna. 1st: Bodden, if he truly is a man-to-man coverage-type CB then why play sooooo much zone, without a decent pass rush (which btw Detroit doesn't have) then it tend to leave the CB exposed in zone. 2nd Kitna, he's playing out of position as well, Kitna is a back-up QB (at best). Beside in my opinion once a TRUE HC is hired then we may see the players respond better. One can only hope!

FTLAUDLION is right. I live in Miami & heard on "the ticket" this Roy to the Dolphins rumor. I prefer the Lions do nothing, because I don't trust any lame duck executive (and he BETTER be a lame duck) making a good deal.

HOWEVER... if they offer a 1st??? The Lions have to do that deal. It's just a rumor though & I have no idea where it started.

    Can't wait for the offseason!!

I've been hearing it for ever. From the Kool-aid in the summer months and how great they are, to the Lions being a laughing stock 4 games in. Every year it's the same crap. I've been a Lions fan for far to long, supporting them through thick and thin. I've been hearing the same crap...year in and year out (one exception, a couple of Barry years which brought great joy) of how this year has changed. WHATEVER!!! As of last week, I'm done until they have a proven contender. I'm so sick of being bent Sunday nights because of my hapless Lions. Why fire Rod? What the hell has he proven other than saying he some great teacher??? He sticks to his plan, he will fight to the end...yada, yada, yada. I like him as a man and what he stands for, but if you can't change your scheme to your personnel...then don't coach. I mean, I even picked up Orton of all people just this past week to score some major points against my Lions D. Guess what?? He delivered without disappointment. How did that happen? Because our team sucks! I wish I had something to look forward to other than another crushing. I hope they can miraculously turn it around before it's done. I just can't stand to back them up anymore, it's killing me. Don't give me this crap about finding another team either. They are my team, it's just years of seeing the same product take the field. All the years of the great summer hope....only to be let down. Done. WCF....GET ME A WINNER!!!!!!

Trade Roy to the Eagles for a second rounder and lito Shepard or Trevor laws. They are ridding the pine anyways!
