Question: I live in an early 1900s two-story brick home in a historic district. The house has, I think, solid masonry walls. It is very cold in the winter, especially near the exterior walls and windows. Because I can’t change anything on the outside of the house because of the historic restrictions (and I wouldn’t want to do anything to the brick anyway), what options are available to add insulation to the inside of the house? Full story »

Deciding to upgrade a newer furnace will require some calculation and consideration

We had our old gas furnace replaced nine years ago and had an 80 percent efficient one installed. It has worked reliably since then. The salesman had tried to talk us into getting a 95 percent furnace, but it seemed quite expensive ($1,000 more than the 80 percent one), and we didn’t want to spend the extra money.
