    Creston unveils new mural

    The new mural on the south side of the Quality Care Upholstery Building, 1312 Plainfield Ave. NE, was officially unveiled last week by the Creston Neighborhood Association and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts' ArtWorks program.
    A new mural will help brighten up the Plainfield Avenue corridor in Grand Rapids' Creston Neighborhood.

    The mural was painted on the south side of the Quality Craft Upholstery Building at 1312 Plainfield Ave. NE, between Page and Spencer streets.

    Courthouse squabble continues, embattled Servaas may retire

    If the battle was taking place on a playground, an attentive teacher might send all parties involved to a time out. As it is, the ongoing conflict between District Judge Steven Servaas and several county employees--including fellow judge Sara Smolenski--could lead to Servaas' decision to retire. That's if he isn't forced off the bench by the state's Judicial Tenure Commission first.

    Old car dealership could be new museum in Rockford

    It would be an overstatement to call the former Northland Buick Pontiac GMC car dealership recently purchased by the city of Rockford an eyesore, but at the very least, it's in need of some renovation and repair. Rockford City Manager Michael Young says he would like to see the building torn down, so city planners could develop the property from a "clean slate."

    Rockford Lions honored

    The Rockford Lions Club recently recognized the outstanding service of members Jack Schwab and Larry Lindsley to both their club and community by naming each a Melvin Jones Fellow. Named for Lions founder Melvin Jones, the award is the highest honor bestowed by the club for a recipient's commitment to humanitarian work.     'Whodunit?' returns to Grand Rapids Museum

    Cedar Springs Council denies museum's request

    Rally raises $4,000 for cancer research

    Rockford resident Sue Harrison (left) and her sister, Robin Wiltenburg, both survivors of breast cancer, helped raise $4,000 for cancer research at a recent event held at Rogue Golf Club in Sparta.
    Last year Sue Harrison's "Happy Bodies" Rally for the Cure golf outing brought in just under $2,000, over half of which was donated to the Grand Rapids chaper of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and organization that offers financial assistance to women who cannot afford mammograms. This year's event, held Aug. 9 at Rogue Golf Club in Sparta, more than doubled that amount.     GR considers changes related to Proposal 2

    Firms doing business with Grand Rapids may soon be rewarded for employing city residents.

    Granting bid discounts to firms who hire city residents is among several changes proposed by the city's Equal Opportunity Office is in response to Proposal 2, the constitutional amendment approved by Michigan voters in 2006 that prohibits affirmative action programs at public institutions.
