Recently Circuit Judge Donald Johnston ruled that the 63rd District Court in Rockford may be relocated according to county plans despite numerous protests from both the City of Rockford and Judge Stephen Servaas, who for several decades has presided there.

The new mural on the south side of the Quality Care Upholstery Building, 1312 Plainfield Ave. NE, was officially unveiled last week by the Creston Neighborhood Association and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts' ArtWorks program.The mural was painted on the south side of the Quality Craft Upholstery Building at 1312 Plainfield Ave. NE, between Page and Spencer streets.

If the battle was taking place on a playground, an attentive teacher might send all parties involved to a time out. As it is, the ongoing conflict between District Judge Steven Servaas and several county employees--including fellow judge Sara Smolenski--could lead to Servaas' decision to retire. That's if he isn't forced off the bench by the state's Judicial Tenure Commission first.

It would be an overstatement to call the former Northland Buick Pontiac GMC car dealership recently purchased by the city of Rockford an eyesore, but at the very least, it's in need of some renovation and repair. Rockford City Manager Michael Young says he would like to see the building torn down, so city planners could develop the property from a "clean slate."

The Rockford Lions Club recently recognized the outstanding service of members Jack Schwab and Larry Lindsley to both their club and community by naming each a Melvin Jones Fellow.

A special exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum will give visitors a shot at solving a murder.
"Whodunit? The Science of Solving Crime" opens Labor Day weekend at the Van Andel Museum Center, located at 272 Pearl St. NW.

Firms doing business with Grand Rapids may soon be rewarded for employing city residents.
Granting bid discounts to firms who hire city residents is among several changes proposed by the city's Equal Opportunity Office is in response to Proposal 2, the constitutional amendment approved by Michigan voters in 2006 that prohibits affirmative action programs at public institutions.
