In September and October, Allegan and Barry County suffered severe storms and flooding.
The weather was the result of Atlantic Hurricane Ike, the third most destructive hurricane to hit the United States in U.S. history, which formed on Sept. 1 and dissipated on Sept. 16. Severe storms triggered by Ike caused around $760,000 worth of damage in Allegan County, including damage to businesses and residences.

At around 10:13 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, the Leighton Township Fire Department responded to a fire at a rental home on 137th Avenue in Leighton Township. The unoccupied rental home, which was under renovation, was located near the home of the rental property's owner. Firefighters were on the scene until around 2 a.m. and were able to save a garage at the site. Assisting the Leighton Township Fire Department were the fire departments of Dorr, Thornapple Township and Wayland and Wayland Area Emergency Medical Services. The Rev. Jeffrey Douglas Voorhees, 37, of Zeeland, died in an Allegan County crash on Nov. 21.
At around 10:23 a.m. that day, Allegan County Central Dispatch received a call about a crash at the intersection of 142nd Avenue and 38th Street in Overisel Township. A resident at 3790 142nd Avenue, who said that a vehicle had struck the house, made the call.

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is urging Michigan residents to drive with care this winter.
In a recent press release, titled "Ice and snow? Take it slow," Land said, "Winter is a great time to experience Michigan's beautiful outdoors, but without enough caution, snow and ice can make even short trips dangerous," Land said. "Drivers should take a moment to make sure they're prepared and remember to watch out for icy roadways."

On Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Dorr Township Hall, the Dorr Lions Association handed out 55 Thanksgiving baskets to local residents, serving 165 people in need. Jim Maynard, spokesperson for the Lions Association, said the baskets were made possible by American Legion Post 127, the Dorr Business Association, Moose Lodge 2541, Project Hope, Dick's Marker, Four Seasons Hardware, Maynards Water Conditioning Service, National Wild Turkey Federation Center - Rabbit River, Otto's Turkey Farm, Spartan Foods and Tilly's Deli & Pizzeria. On Nov. 18, members of the Rabbit River Longspurs club donated 60 turkeys to Wayland's Christian Neighbors Food Pantry. The Wayland-based club is the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Club members are from the Wayland area, Dorr, Gun Lake and Middleville.

Dressed in traditional English riding clothing is Horse Haven Ranch Ministries Board President Janine Holmes. 250 people attended a Horse Haven Harvest Party Oct. 4, when Holmes gave an English riding demonstration. For three years, the family has operated the Christian non-denominational Horse Haven Ranch Ministries. The ministry's home base is a Hopkins ranch at 1993 135th Ave. The family also has a Web site at www.horsehavenranchministries.com.

With Deb Nier leaving Wayland to accept another position, the search is on for a new City Manager.
Nier was hired in November 2003 to replace former City Manager Mike Jager. Nier's last day at City Hall will be Dec. 23, before she leaves to serve as City Administrator of Marengo, Ill.

Seventy-five bras were attached to Joyce Commons' house, mailbox and tree.Commons, whose birthday was Nov. 6, was shocked when she saw the outside of her house. There were bras on the house, on a clothesline, the mailbox and in a tree.
