    Bully puppet

    by Advance Newspapers
    Monday October 06, 2008, 9:59 AM

Students at St. Theresa Elementary School in Wayland had fun learning about a serious subject: school bullying. On Sept. 25, students in grades kindergarten through 6 enjoyed a visit from puppeteer Dave Parker, his puppet "Skippy," and a host of puppet pals. During Parker's high-energy program, the students laughed, clapped, and sang along. Parker, of Marquette, uses his talents as a ventriloquist, guitarist, and vocalist to bring a variety of programs to schools, nursing homes, libraries, and events nationwide. Parker has performed as an opening act for magician David Copperfield and television's "In Living Color" comedian A.J. Jamal. "We thought it was a very positive way to start the school year," said Principal Jane Gee. "I'm sure the kids will remember it for a long time." For more information about Parker, visit his Web site at www.skippyanddave.com.

Stones for fallen heroes replaced, rededicated

    by Charlotte Weick
    Tuesday September 30, 2008, 11:02 AM

On a cool, foggy morning last Sunday, a group of men gathered at Maplewood Cemetery in Hopkins Township. The morning was still and quiet as they assembled the tools they needed for their task: shovels, cement, rakes and wooden boards.

The men put their hands, muscles and minds to a common cause: new grave markers for fallen heroes. The markers looked old, but were actually Mississippi marble replicas of Civil War soldiers' gravestones. Their job Sunday morning was to install new stones for Civil War soldiers who had unmarked graves or whose gravestones had fallen in disrepair.

LETTER: Proposal 2 wording smacks of irony

    by Penasee Globe
    Tuesday September 30, 2008, 10:42 AM

    Ironic?

I could not help but see the irony in the wording of an article in the Sept. 22 edition of the Penasee Globe: "Voters will be asked to consider the use and cultivation of medical marijuana and embryo and embryonic stem cell research." I understand that the phrase "use and cultivation" was meant to refer to the medical marijuana. But it can also be used to describe the embryos that scientists want to do research on.

    Book bounty for Steeby School

    by Penasee Globe
    Tuesday September 30, 2008, 10:38 AM

Elaine Rewa was mystified when Steeby Elementary School received boxes of books. Rewa, who works as the school's media assistant and school coordinator for the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program, did not order the books. "RIF is a federal program that gives books to children three times a school year," Rewa said. "I did not order four huge boxes of books for RIF, so I called the company on the box and it turned out that Colgate and Meijer partnered to donate books to students under the RIF program. Of course I was very excited!" When she opened the boxes, Rewa was stunned to see that the books were not paperbacks, but 120 hard cover books for the media center. The 3rd grade class of Laurie Howell also appreciates the new books.

Oldies but goodies: Sock Hop returns to Wayland

    by Kaylyn Van Harn
    Monday September 29, 2008, 4:47 PM

From left juniors Kelly Fliestra, Sara Gulch, Stephanie Josey and Mika McGinnis show that girls just gotta have fun!

Over 250 students danced to strobe lights and DJ music last week after the Wayland Wildcats pounced upon the Hastings Saxons 44 to 13. The Sock Hop was the first dance of this kind at Wayland High School in over 10 years.

Teachers and co-organizers Andrea Brown and Kim Moore were looking for a way to raise money for three academic teams: the Business Professionals of America, the debate team, and the forensic (competitive speaking and drama) team. The dance succeeded in raising just over $1000. The money will be used to offset the travel expenses for the academic teams.
