Blakely on WGHN: Signing Brown 'a roll of the dice'

    by Philip Zaroo | MLive.com
    Tuesday July 29, 2008, 1:49 PM

Joe Dumars has one thing in mind with the signing of former first-round pick Kwame Brown as a free agent: You can't hit a home run if you don't swing the bat. MLive Pistons Insider A. Sherrod Blakely says Brown has the talent needed to give the team one of the NBA's most formidable frontcourts.

"It's a roll of the dice," Blakely tells Ryan Terpstra of WGHN-AM (1370). "That's the only way to explain it. This is a team that was looking to get guys who were willing to play hard all the time. That's something that was an issue the last couple of years. And Kwame is the poster boy for the other side of the coin on that issue. So it is a bit baffling.

"But, again, his talent is worth the gamble. And he's never been around a team of veterans like this Pistons group. So they're banking that that's going to be what it takes to get Kwame to play with the kind of toughness, the kind of aggressiveness ... y'know, play at the level that he's supposed to play at."

Depending on the Pistons' other moves, Brown just may even start, Blakely adds. That would allow Rasheed Wallace to move back to the power forward position.

I don't buy it because you don't hope for a boom with a one year signing. If it was a two year deal with a team option for a third year then I might believe the Pistons see anything in KB, but since it's a one year deal with a player option for the second year, he's nothing but trade bait roster filler.

Kwame Brown??? I say again, Kwame Brown?? This young man obviously has some talent and in the long run, I guess there is nothing to lose. Perhaps maybe the veterans on this team will give him a dose of reality as to what it takes to achieve excellence but his track record stinks and we all know that things usually stink for a reason .. Kwame Brown??

It is a 2 year deal. 8 mill for 2 years.

Print my NBA Finals ticket, we got K.Brown
he will be like T. Chandler, new team avg double double, Go Pistons!

Prince, 9 mil + K.Brown 4 mil for maybe J. Smith at 12, 13 mil. A way for the salaries to match without the Pistons giving up another piece.

Maybe Joe wants another reclaimation project. Maybe he figures that the present locker room might be able to keep Kwame in line, much like the Bad Boys kept Dennis Rodman from imploding during their championship run.

Hey hank, read much? 2 year deal.

just to clear things up...kwame cannot be traded until 3 months into the season. The league does not allow players to be traded if they are signed as unrestricted free agents, until they have played 3 months into the regular season (blakely on wdfn 1130 today). I have reasons I think this deal was done. 1) If the pistons are serious about getting josh smith, it will take at least tayshaun and amir, so by getting Kwame, you can move Amir (b/c Kwame essentially is taking away his minutes). 2) if that is not the reason, I think blakely totally hit the nail on the head. It is a very low risk move so I can't hate it...

He's better than theo, so it's an upgrade

its a 1 yr contract with a player option for the second yr

so get a clue and leave hank alone

    goblueinatl are you kidding me?

what is this team going to teach anyone about excellence

what they can teach kwame is how to achieve above-averageness

Posted by hankscorpio on 07/29/08 at 7:26PM

It is a two year deal BUT it's a player option for the second year meaning if Brown "Booms" he's opting out and we have no rights to him. This is why I said it's not any real reclamation project that we have any faith in - if we did we'd what three years so we'd at least have his Bird Rights.

I think this is just a big body and his value comes from his $4M contract that we'll look to trade at the trade deadline, possibly with an expiring Rasheed for a big fish on a longer term deal.

Only way Brown wouldn't opt out if he was sure he couldn't get $4M in another free agent deal. And for that to happen he'll have to really suck for us or be injured. Otherwise he'd opt out and look for a longer term deal elsewhere rather than play with no security here on the second year of the deal.

I think Kwame's done, but I have seen games where he was great. He's just lazy, has no confidence, and somehow in the last couple of years his hands turned to stone. I don't think he'll be good, but I'm ok with trying, as long as Amir still gets some minutes.

    Posted by map444 on 07/29/08 at 8:25PM

Ahh Freenoel, No he's no where near the player Theo is, In fact, I'd take a broken down C-Webb over Kwame

    MINITATER ..

I guess 6 eastern conference series appereances, two finals appereances and a championship is chopped liver compared to what all other teams have done. Outside of San Antonio, what team has been as consistent or even better over the last 10 years?? Also, compared to where Kwame Brown has been and where he is, this team is excellence.

Posted by MINITATER on 07/29/08 at 9:50PM

where can i buy my conference series appearance gear

    i will take 2 hats and a t-shirt

have the pistons set the date for hanging that 2008 conference appearance banner

    nobody cares about "comparative" excellence

i thought the pistons motto was nothing matters but the championship

they dont measure up to their own standard , they dont have to when they have a fan base as complacent as their starting 5

the spurs have 5(?) titles. comparing the pistons to them is like comparing atlanta to the pistons

    have a good day

Posted by GoBlueInAtl on 07/29/08 at 10:55PM

    MONITATER ..

I didn't compare them to San Antonio, my friend .. No team can be compared to San Antonio. I simply said aside from San Antonio, who has been better than the Pistons, that is an overall body of work??

Posted by moochhater on 07/30/08 at 7:55AM

The Spurs have 5 titles. The Pistons have 3. I'm not really sure what the point is in that statement. What? The Spurs won 2 more titles than the Pistons?

Posted by motownmann on 07/30/08 at 9:43AM

    Minitater,

It’s a two-year deal at $4 million per year, but with a player option after the 2008-09 season. It can essentially be a one year deal if Brown bolts for more money...but that would be because he had a productive year, as he had no interest this past offseason.

    RETNAP

Interesting thought about the combination of contracts to equal Josh Smith.

    Posted by map444 on 07/30/08 at 10:19AM

Kwame Brown, give me a break. Yea his 4.8 ppg. and 4 rpg are going put Pistons over the top. Get real. This team has been just going through the motions for 2 years now and thats just what they need to add, the most non-motivated player in the league Kwame Brown. 41-41 next year, and down from there
    Joe's gotta go

    Posted by map444 on 07/30/08 at 10:28AM

    YOU SUCK JOE D!!
AND YOU SUCK EVEN MORE FOR TRYING TO PASS THIS OFF TO US AS A YOUR BIG CHANGE!!!

    Posted by mako1774 on 07/30/08 at 1:57PM

map stop crying Dumars never said signing Brown was a big move.Joe's got a plan .Just relax an come in of the ledge.

Posted by xprtobserver on 07/30/08 at 3:25PM

It is a two year deal with a PLAYER option the second year. If he plays his ass off he can opt out for a big contract. That's IF...but it is set to motivate him for this next year.

    Posted by map444 on 07/31/08 at 11:19AM

No Mako, Joe doesn't have a plan, Joe thinks his lazy team is fine the way it is because no ones gonna let him steal their best player for his garbage. This team is rotting away and the rest of the league knows it. He talked alot of crap for show. And no this isn't setting up a trade for Josh Smith, so put that pipe dream away

    Posted by mako1774 on 07/31/08 at 1:34PM

Map the Pistons are not garbage.Joe D is not stupid. It takes 2 teams for a trade and you dont trade just for the sake of trading. From how often you post it sounds like you follow the NBA if that is the case you know how good Dumars is.Just seems to me you dont know much about building a team that is competitive.Map you just want players with big names you dont really want this team to win then what would you have to complain about.59 wins ,second best record in the league ,lost to the team with the best record. Please learn the game of basketball. Also just because you complain more than anyone else that doesn't mean you care more or know more than other fans.

    Posted by youngdboy007 on 07/31/08 at 10:10PM

Who cares about Kwame Brown, He's Better then Nazr, and bigger then McDyess. This is another sign that of all the pistons hype around them moving some of there core players has nothing to do with Rasheed Wallace. McDyess is way more effective off the bench and Kwame might even learn a thing or two from the vets on the team. Its not a win win, but its not a lose lose either.
