Overturned goal should have been reviewable
by Ansar Khan

Short takes on Game 4 of the Western Conference finals:
After the way Tomas Holmstrom frustrated Marty Turco in the first two games of the series, you could almost predict what was eventually going to happen: The Red Wings would have a goal disallowed because Holmstrom was either: a) in the crease, b) interfering with Turco, or c) had his rear end hanging over the crease.
But what was frustrating for the Wings was that Holmstrom committed none of those infractions and yet referee Kelly Sutherland still disallowed a goal by Pavel Datsyuk in the second period.
It was a bad call, plain and simple. Replays showed neither Holmstrom's skates or his rear end were in the crease. Clearly, referees were just waiting for a chance to make that call on Holmstrom. Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said officials told him the play is not reviewable. It should be. Because the mistake could have been corrected.
-- Loui Eriksson's goal in the final minute of the second period was a good goal. There was no debate about that, Wings GM Ken Holland even said so after the game. You're allowed to be in the crease, as long as you're not inferering with or impeding the goalie's movement. And Eriksson wasn't hindering Chris Osgood.
-- Turco played his best game, but still allowed a soft goal to Henrik Zetterberg. He is really a perplexing goalie. He is often stellar against other teams but usually stinks against the Wings. And the Wings have a habit of making goalies look better than they are.
-- For the first time in the series, Dallas' best players outperformed Detroit's best players. Brendan Morrow and Mike Modano, both shaken up the last game, came back strong. Mike Ribeiro went 10-1 in the faceoff circle and was a plus-two. Sergei Zubov made a nice pass to set up Modano. And Brad Richards (no points, 0-6 on faceoffs)? Well, I still haven't been able to figure out why he makes $7.8 million a season. If he's worth that, how much are Datsyuk and Zetterberg worth?
The playoff is important, I can't believe until now the refs seemingly, are still intentionally making bad calls against certain teams and favors for others. They ought to be fired. This is why replay is so important mr. NHL commissioner! NHL should follow the NFL's replay model. Now we Wings are going back to our home turf, and put Dallas out for good. Wings in five. WINGS ROCK!
Did no one see the stars goal by...Erikson i think... where he had 2 skates in the paint and his stick in Ozzy's belly? I haven't heard a single thing about it anywhere.
I can see disallowing Homers goal per reputation, but Eriksons was plain as day and should have been disallowed.
Plus there was at least 1 other wings goals that wasn't counted. Turco spinning into the net at the end of the third, you could see the puck cross the line but 'the ref was attempting to blow his whistle' even tho turco didn't have it covered.
Referee's should not be allowed to determine the outcome of the game.
Dragin:
I totally agree and saw that goal as well. On the replay you could see the puck slide across the line but it was ruled no goal. The Holmstrom call was absurd as wellas the non call on the Stars goal when the guy was completely..full body in the crease. I'm sorry...but refs need to be held to a standard. If any one of us screwed the pooch on an account like that at work we'd be fired. You can't trust the integrity of the sport if you can't trust the officials to call a fair game. First we have a ref thrown out of the NBA for gambling on games he called...now we have the commissioners office secretly asking for bum calls from the refs in order to extend a series so the league can generate more revenue. Baseball umpires have such a "God" complex they throw their weight and bad calls around all the time daring anyone to stand up for themselves and say anything. I know exactly what baseball needs to get the strike zone problem squared away. Install 2 sensors in home plate itself (similar to the sensor in the goal of hockey). One that turns red when the ball is over the plate and the other to gauge the height over the plate to be called a strike. That would reduce the umps duties to determining only if a batter went too far around on his swing or calling the balls fair or foul as well as safe or out. No more leaving it up to the umps discretion about balls and strikes since it is waaaay too arbitrary and changes for each game and each pitcher. Case in point last night Verlander never got any called strikes when he painted the corners but KC's pitcher got the strike called for the same pitch. Umpires and refs in all sports need the instant replay for the fiasco calls such as in last nights Wings game and sensors in the plate for baseball.
Awesome posts, all of you..ps Hey Daryl, long time no see :)
I literally LoL'ed after Eriksons goal was allowed after Homers was not.You sorta knew that the powers that be werent letting the Wings sweep this one, which they would have done if the 1st goal is allowed.
That would have changed the whole dynamic of the game...making Dullass play more of our game and we WOULD have ate em up.
Oh well, clinching at home is probably sweeter for the boys :)
I am more Pist than anyone about dats goal being disallowed but eriksons goal was good because the puck was in the crease before the player.
Honestly, what are you guys complaining about? Detroit gets every freaking call. I agree that the goal should have been disallowed, but what about the 2 other goals in that series that Detroit scored when Holmstrom was clearly interfering with Turco that WERE allowed? No one says anything about those, now, do they? The entire Red Wings team commits numerous penalties that aren't called. On more than one occasion, you'll see one of them actually leave his skates to hit someone who doesn't even have the puck. So STFU already! You're gonna win the Stanley Cup, even if you didn't really earn it.
