Saginaw County Circuit Judge William A. Crane postponed a hearing planned for today on whether to stop the county Road Commission and its contractor from applying pesticide along roads.

The Road Commission intends to apply the pesticides beginning Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 19.

Crane rescheduled the hearing to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, to hear testimony from the plaintiffs, Ronald S. and Marilyn Pokrak.

More than 600 students prepared for Back to School at Saginaw zoo

by Corey Mitchell | The Saginaw News
    Thursday August 28, 2008, 9:59 AM

Off to a good start: Mya Banda-Grayson, 6, of Saginaw, begins a stretching exercise to touch her toes with Fayleta R. Williams, 46, of Saginaw, a program coordinator at the Saginaw YMCA. Mya was attending a Back-to-School at the Zoo event Wednesday at the Children's Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw, where the YMCA had a booth encouraging healthy living. Mya is the daughter of Andrea Banda of Bridgeport.
Six-year-old Mya Banda-Grayson rolled her arms in a circular motion, got inked up with a football tattoo and hung out with a bunch of animals Wednesday.

She was among more than 600 students who spent the day at the Children's Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw, prepping for the first day of school.

Along with her grandmother, Marylou Banda of Saginaw, the first-grader made a bright pink bookmark with her name on it and exercised with staff from the Saginaw YMCA during the third annual "Back to School at the Zoo."

She'll report to the International Academy of Saginaw on Tuesday, the first day of classes for most mid-Michigan students.

School representatives and officials from several businesses and agencies handed out notebooks, pencils and bookbags to children.

"It sort of became like a treasure hunt through the zoo," said Ann Puszykowski, an administrative assistant at the zoo, 1730 S. Washington. "We just want to have a fun way of helping them get ready for school."

Freeland native and Olympic equestrian's mount tests positive for banned substance

by The Saginaw News and The Associated Press
    Thursday August 28, 2008, 8:53 AM

Courtney King of the United States rides Harmony's Mythilus during the Equestrian Individual Dressage competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong, Aug. 19.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The horse that Freeland native Courtney King Dye rode in dressage competition at the Olympics has tested positive for a banned medication, and her rider says it's the first she's heard of the drug.

The International Equestrian Federation notified King Dye of the positive test and her suspension from the games Aug. 22, three days after she finished the dressage competition in Hong Kong in 13th place.

"Evidence and written submissions have been requested from each rider, and a three-member panel of the FEI tribunal has been appointed," the federation officials said in a statement. "The panel will then, in light of all the evidence received, take a decision as to the applicable sanction if any."

King Dye's mount, Harmony's Mythilus, tested positive for felbinac, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever.
