    Delay costs Bridgeport-Spaulding school district

by Gus Burns | The Saginaw News
    Friday November 28, 2008, 9:05 PM

Last year, the Bridgeport-Spaulding Community School District postponed making a decision that could have saved $8,000 a year.

If the district piggybacks its board elections to coincide with the November general elections in Bridgeport and Spaulding townships on even-numbered years, it would not incur election costs unless the ballot is too large to combine with the townships'.

by Barrie Barber | The Saginaw News
    Sunday November 23, 2008, 1:44 AM

True to his word, a mid-Michigan legislator angered over anonymous robocalls targeting a campaign rival has asked the attorney general to investigate the unsolicited attack and others like it.

In a letter sent this month, state Rep. Kenneth B. Horn vowed to sponsor a bill "that protects consumers from unwanted negative messages in their homes."

Health levy defeat pinches workers at small businesses

by Jill Armentrout | The Saginaw News
    Monday November 10, 2008, 7:29 AM

Barry M. Rindhage of Saginaw likely will lose his health insurance coverage and worries about medical bills piling up during an emergency.

He is one of two employees at The Print Shop in Saginaw Township and contributes to his health insurance along with his boss and a county subsidy.

The defeat Tuesday of an eight-year, 1-mill levy to support basic health services for low-income adults under the nonprofit Saginaw Health Plan will change that.

Benjamin L. Gombar, left, owner of The Print Shop, 5645 State in Saginaw Township, provided health insurance to his employee Barry M. Rindhage through the Tri-Share part of the county health plan

    Hope for the Saginaw Valley?

by Justin Engel Barrie Barber Jill Armentrout and Jean Spenner | The Saginaw News
    Sunday November 09, 2008, 12:37 AM

Mid-Michigan has critical issues -- and a president who promises change.

Ben N. Schramm, 19, of Pinconning works on boarding up an abandoned home at 1823 W. Genesee Tuesday morning. Schramm in an employee of the Wolgast Corporation.
Without ever stepping foot in Saginaw County, President-elect Barack Obama convinced nearly three out of five voters here that he is the best candidate to lead the United States for the next four years.

What does that mean for mid-Michigan?

Birch Run, Michigan, winner lucky he made ballot

by Gus Burns | The Saginaw News
    Saturday November 08, 2008, 1:12 AM

A series of election mistakes in Birch Run Township knocked the top vote-getter off the official list of results.

Edward C. McNamara Jr., 55, received the most votes of any candidate running for the Birch Run Village Council, but he was fortunate his name appeared on the ballot at all.

Arrest in Saginaw County, Michigan, preceded lawmaker's re-election

by Dean Bohn | The Saginaw News
    Friday November 07, 2008, 11:20 PM

A state representative captured his third and final House term Tuesday, but Saginaw County sheriff's deputies captured him six days earlier -- booking him for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Kevin J. Green, 38, a Wyoming Republican, was in the driver's seat, slumped into the passenger seat, when deputies on patrol discovered him parked at a Bay business in Kochville Township at 1:50 a.m.

Man in KKK regalia carrying gun walks Midland sidewalks to protest Obama win

by Dean Bohn | The Saginaw News
    Friday November 07, 2008, 7:27 AM

MIDLAND -- A Midland man told police that his walking on the sidewalk in full Knights of Ku Klux Klan regalia while toting a handgun had nothing to do with Barack Obama winning the presidency.

Later, however, he admitted that Obama's victory was the catalyst for his display.

Midland police questioned Randy G. Gray II, 30, who was walking on the sidewalk along Eastman near North Saginaw Wednesday afternoon while waving an American flag but released him because he wasn't breaking any laws.

Saginaw Township feeling more blue than ever as its voters put Democrats in office

by Barrie Barber | The Saginaw News
    Thursday November 06, 2008, 6:19 AM

For years in the Saginaw County political landscape, politicians could reliably predict Saginaw Township as a ruby "red" Republican community.

After Tuesday's election, you can color that map Democratic "blue." for now.

The suburb confounded the GOP when voters gave Democrat Barack Obama a narrow edge over Republican John McCain for president, kicked two long-time incumbent Republicans off the County Board of Commissioners in exchange for two Democrats and gave the most votes among five running for the Township Board of Trustees to the sole Democrat in the contest.

by Justin Engel and Dean Bohn | The Saginaw News

Saginaw County Sheriff Charles L. Brown says his successor should have a smooth transition into the job despite their very public battles.

"My election shows people have faith in the system. This is the reverse of the apathy we've been seeing."

by Barrie Barber | The Saginaw News
    Wednesday November 05, 2008, 5:55 AM

Midland Township Republican James N. Stamas had to hire a manager at his Midland pizzeria so he could take a job in Lansing.

Stamas beat Tittabawassee Township Democrat Garnet Lewis in Tuesday's general election to claim the state House 98th District. Term limits prevented state Rep. John R. Moolenaar of Midland from re-election in the district that spans parts of Saginaw and Midland counties.

Stamas captured 25,977 votes (about 57.9 percent) versus 18,871 (42.1 percent) for Lewis.
