    GRANDVILLE - It isn't often after a loss that one can say a team saved its best for last.

    But that's exactly what happened in the Class C regional volleyball semifinals when Calvin Christian lost to Morley Stanwood, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, 3-1.

    O-K White stars shine on Advance All-Area Boys Tennis Team

    With conference alignments shaking up area sports, this boys tennis season saw the rise of the ultra-competitive O-K White. Playing host to two top-five state teams in East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Christian, the White also spawned three No. 1 singles state finalists, including Mr. Tennis hopeful  Michael Sukenik of East Grand Rapids, Northview's Aaron Hendrick, and Greenville's Bryant Dudzik. The O-K White also crowned six state-flight winners.


    The search for the best male tennis players of 2008 reached epic proportions. While all are deserving, only a slim few of talented racketeers can make the cut. With that said, we give you the Advance All-Area Boys Tennis team:

    New Kent County Animal Shelter to open this winter

    Construction is nearly complete on this 23,000-square-foot building on Fuller Avenue, which will soon be the new home of the Kent County Animal Shelter.
    Moving to a new home can be exciting, if hectic. Staff members at the Kent County Animal Shelter have been quite busy recently as they prepare to relocate to a brand-new building.

    Although the actual move is still several weeks away, the public is invited to tour the new facility at 740 Fuller Ave. NE from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today (Tuesday).

    Annual Byron Goes Bluegrass hits the stage this weekend

    Cadillac Sky will bring its cutting edge bluegrass to Byron Center Saturday.
    It will be non-stop bluegrass Saturday night inside VanSingel Fine Arts Center.

    Cadillac Sky will headline this year's Byron Goes Bluegrass, an event that helped organizer Patty Williams win a Philo T. Farnsworth Award - named after the inventor of television -j last year.

    KDL wrangles with first-ever decline in revenues

    Declining property values have put a bit of a pinch on the Kent District Library's upcoming budget.

    KDL has seen a growth rate of 5-percent annually, but that figure has dropped to just 1.5-percent for this coming year. In all, 85 percent of the KDL operating budget comes from property tax revenues through a dedicated millage.

    Movie landmark set to shut its doors after 43 years

    John Loeks, flanked by his daughter, Emily, announced the closing of Studio 28 last Friday.
    It was on a dreary Friday morning that John Loeks announced the closing of Studio 28, the one-time showpiece of the local theater empire he and father Jack built.

    After celebrating many firsts, the theater is facing its final curtain call this Sunday.

    Bristal Mitchell excels on and off the volleyball court

    WYOMING -- Bristal Mitchell is getting real serious about volleyball. The 16-year-old Rogers junior has forsaken basketball so that she can play club volleyball for Carpe Diem during the winter. Last year she even skipped softball for another session of club volleyball, but she is planning on trying out for softball again in the spring.

    "Volleyball is my favorite sport," Bristal told us right up front. "I used to play basketball, but I love volleyball much more. I love the intensity."

    Godwin needs community involvement in healing process

    Interim Godwin Heights Superintendent Patrick Murphy has hit the ground running.

    After serving the district for 14 years, Murphy retired and was replaced by Valdis Gailitis. With Gailitis on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into his role in Jerry Emde's admitted inflation of student count records.

    Green calls OUIL arrest a life lesson

    He's apologetic, and has said it will never happen again.

    State Representative Kevin Green, who represents Wyoming and Byron Township, was arrested Oct. 29 and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Saginaw County. Police allegedly found him in his car, slumped over and covered in vomit.

    Byron voters decline to fund museum

    In all, 7,797 voters said no to a .12 mill increase to fund museum operations, while just 3,139 supported the measure.

    Grand Rapids man hit, killed on 28th Street

    Plans proceeding for senior housing along 28th Street

    It is no accident that Bob Israels has landed the role as a defacto savior of the Wyoming Town Center area. It is all part of his vision.

    With the recent opening of Klingman's Furniture and work on a planned senior housing community, he's blazing a trail along 28th Street.

    Klingman's exceeding initial sales goals

    Kelloggsville falls to top-ranked Oakridge in playoffs

    The Rockets couldn't slow down a high-powered Oakridge offense in Friday's Division 5 playoff game.

    Kelloggsville's football team fell behind 33-12 at halftime but managed to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter in a valiant overall effort. In a game in which three defensive turnovers led to Oakridge points, the Rockets found themselves in a hole against an undefeated Oakridge team.
